I bet the internet ten bucks here and now that whoever the Republican nominee is in 2012, he or she will have made several public statements that torture is legal and morally permissible.Fortunately for them, Mr. Obama’s criticism will be met by the reply of “Well, if it’s immoral, why did you do it? Lose/lose/lost.
I don’t really see Obama criticizing torture as a new American institution because he would do so on EXTREMELY shaky ground, what with his continuing the involuntary detention policies that led to this garbage in the first place, but I think the key difference will likely be that Barack Obama will not say ‘Let’s torture the shit out of some brown people hoooah’ in a primary debate and get cheered on for it.
