GEORGE HITLER BUSH / Ross Douthat

Ross Douthat’s current NYT piece is about how the Bush presidency was a failure, but Bush himself was a ‘good president,’ because he managed to make the severe clusterfucks less severe than they would have been otherwise (e.g. the surge in Iraq doing some work to avoid the worst possible result of the horrible clusterfuck of Iraq).

Let’s pretend that a bunch of guys go around firing shots through people’s windows. One of the guys starts feeling bad so a few hours before they go out shooting, he goes around the neighborhood and hands out some bulletproof vests, and then goes out shooting with them afterwards. Does this make that guy a good member of the community? No, it does not. Similarly, a guy with an incredible propensity to fuck up but the ability to mitigate a LITTLE bit of the damage after fucking up does not make for a good president. That’s stupid.

Way to go for finally writing a column that isn’t about hoo-has and ding dongs, though, Mr. Douthat.
